Before you begin to market your work, it is imperative that a writer register his/her work (treatment or screenplay) with either the WGA (East or West), the US Copyright Office, or an independent registry service. Below you will find links to the major guilds, governmental offices, and private companies that can assist you in doing so.
To further assure the proper protection of your work product, we also recomend that you seek the advice of an entertainment or intellectual property attorney.
WGA East Registration: The fee is $22, you can start the process by following the link.
WGA West Registration: The fee is $20, you can start the process by following the link.
ProtectRite.com: The fee is $18.95 for a ten year registration. You can start the process by following the link.
UK Copyright Service: The UK Copyright Service is a registration centre for original works by writers, musicians, artists, designers, software providers, authors, companies, organisations and individuals.
US Copyright Office: The fee is $30, you can start the process by following the link.
World Wide Online Creator's Registry: Helping writers, artists, inventors and creators affordably protect their works by providing a highly credible online Intellectual Property Date-stamping and Archiving Service. WW OCR offers 7 registrations per year for an annual $20 membership fee. Additional registrations start at $3 each.
Writer's Copyright Association - UK: The fee is 25 UK Pounds (Approximately $40) for a 5 year term. Longer terms are available.
Copyright Witness: Protect your copyright! Information on copyright laws, advice on copyright protection, plus a comprehensive international registration service.
