Grand Prize Winner of the 2015 Screencraft Comedy Contest My screenplay Deerly Beloved,  about an acerbic e-commerce engineer and top wedding blogger who must scramble to right the ship after her much-hyped, televised wedding is  “deer-jacked” by a whitetail buck, is this year's Grand Prize Comedy Winner. Screencraft called it, "an uproarious, high-energy screenplay.  Though weddings have long been mined for comedy premises, Deerly Beloved succeeds in telling a consistently funny and character-driven story that is all its own." It made its way through 1200 entries to achieve this. It is also currently a semifinalist in the 2015 Script Pipeline Screenplay Contest. Nicholl Success With a Dash of Consultant High Regard

Kent Williams' period World War II drama, "Again, Spring" made the 2015 Nicholl quarterfinals, one of 375 out of 7,400.  Equally exciting is that Andrew Hilton a.k.a the Screenplay Mechanic included it in his "Lugnut List" of the ten best screenplays he covered in 2014 (Drew is a politely brutal, highly-regarded script consultant).

Stephen M. Hunt script repped in London. Last year  a string of 1st place wins made Steve Europe's most successful screenplay contest competitor. Networking from this platform led directly to an invitation to write a short crime-drama for an Emmy Award winning TV director (see Steve's prior posts). After that, veteran BBC writer Peter Mackie invited Steve to co-write  a TV pilot with him. The outcome was "Boss Girl" that went on to win 1st prize in this year's Marquee Lights TV pilot category. "Boss Girl" is now being promoted in London by Peter's agent. So these days, 95% of Steve's energy goes into promoting who he is and what he does. The upshot is he'll probably only finish one new feature script this year being "None Shall Survive" which is a brand new take on the horror/slasher genre.

Timothy Benson's, HOOKED, accepted at 2016 Animation Day in Cannes Cannes, France - Screenwriter Timothy M. Benson's flagship feature animation screenplay, HOOKED, a family-fun, fishing-themed adventure, has been recently honored by acceptance at the 2016 Animation Day in Cannes. HOOKED has exploded across the 2015-16 global film festival circuits, winning almost twenty screenwriting awards, including multiple Best Feature Screenplay honors. Benson was inspired to write HOOKED based on his own fishing adventures as a boy and his fascination with the theme of legend.

The story's high-concept is driven by a 10 year old boy's quest for a LEGENDARY fish vs. a villainous fishing captain's thirst for fame and fortune. Below the water's surface, the race is on, as a young fish teams with a group of spirited comrades to find and save his Great Aunt (the legendary behemoth Northern Pike fish known to humans as, "The Beast"). HOOKED has been acclaimed as an epic tale of "legendary proportions" filled with humor, high-stakes, and edge of your seat adventure. Tags: Animation Day in Cannes

THE DRAGON RIDER by Geoff Holder wins Honorable Mention in WISC

Geoff Holder's sci-fi THE DRAGON RIDER gains Honorable Mention (4th Place) in the WeScreenplay International Screenplay Competition.

A few comments from the judges:
"This is a terrific piece that does an excellent job of making the impossible probable. The core of the story is strong and offers a truly exciting adventure."

"Filled with chair gripping action, The Dragon Rider is a fun yet somewhat campy fantasy romp with a cast of unique characters who manage to stand out while not upstaging our protagonist. Sigourney Weaver like heroine Jane is nicely complex, dark yet likable, helping give body to an extremely enjoyable tale."

Congratulations to all the winners.

Stephen M. Hunt

How many entries into screenplay competitions does it take to get a short screenplay filmed?  Well, in the case of Stephen M. Hunt's short fantasy drama script “Death’s Lady Love”, during 2015/16 Hunt entered it into dozens and dozens of them. It got nowhere frequently but also gradually clocked up eleven finalist placings and on one occasion came second. But during all this it was also accumulating 1st place wins -  it wasn’t until the seventh top prize that a deal was done. “Death’s Lady Love” commences filming this autumn on location in Maine.  There are two morals here. Firstly, just like Hollywood itself, screenplay competition land is fickle, indeed. Secondly, ride those ups and downs and never give up.

I worked hard and had a good run that year.  With the help of screenplay consultants Ken Rotcop, Glenn M. Benest, Pilar Alessandra and David Kohner Zuckerman I placed in seven contests, including the 2nd rounds of both Page Screenwriting Awards and the Nicholl Fellowships.

Although I have yet to parlay those successes into a professional writing career, I have continued to expand my expertise in the film business as a studio technician and producer at DCTV in Washington, DC.

Stephen Potts lands development deal for GLAZVOROV

Back in 2011 I woke one morning with the basis for a historically set horror film in my head. (The premise: a trainload of Tsarist Russians steams eastwards, fleeing the Russian Revolution. A pack of Siberian Zombies bars their way.)

Then titled ZOMBIE EXPRESS, I  pitched it at the London Screenwriters' Festival before a couple of hundred people, one of whom liked it enough to ask me to submit it to his company, Iron Box Films. Retitled GLAZVOROV, with a new monster  - and no zombies -  but still set in the Russian Revolution, it then had a rehearsed reading before John Madden and a live audience at BAFTA in London, in the Rocliffe New Writing Forum. Soon after that I clinched a funded development deal with iron Box, a fledgling British company with a growing slate of films in producution and  development.

This story took me on a journey outside of my usual family-friendly genre into the world of Sadie, an abused 15 year old girl devasted by the loss of family and home from a natural disaster. Depsite life's obstacles, Sadie digs deep to find her roots and a courageous voice. The inspiration came to me after watching Carrie Underwood's music video of 'Blown Away'. Lee Tidball Options SANDI CLAUS Lee Tidball's Christmas family fantasy/comedy SANDI CLAUS was optioned in May, 2014 by Berenika Bailey, producer for Magic Elevator.  Berenika discovered the script when Lee responded to an Inktip Preferred Newsletter lead posted by Magic Elevator for animated, family-friendly scripts.  Magic Elevator has since packaged the script and intends to produce it in 2015 pending the securing of private equity financing as a live-action film.  SANDI CLAUS is a two-time Top Ten Finalist in the PAGE Awards (Family Films--2007, 2009) and also a Top Ten Finalist in the Writers On the Storm Screenplay Contest of 2007.  Lee is grateful to Hal and Cheryl Croasmun of Screenwriting U for their Professional Series in Screenwriting and subsequent classes which helped him to elevate SANDI CLAUS to a truly professional level, and Jim Cirile of Coverage Ink for his personal attention that made SANDI CLAUS the script that it is today.  Tags: Magic Elevator, ScreenwritingU
