THE DRAGON RIDER by Geoff Holder wins Honorable Mention in WISC

Geoff Holder's sci-fi THE DRAGON RIDER gains Honorable Mention (4th Place) in the WeScreenplay International Screenplay Competition.

A few comments from the judges:
"This is a terrific piece that does an excellent job of making the impossible probable. The core of the story is strong and offers a truly exciting adventure."

"Filled with chair gripping action, The Dragon Rider is a fun yet somewhat campy fantasy romp with a cast of unique characters who manage to stand out while not upstaging our protagonist. Sigourney Weaver like heroine Jane is nicely complex, dark yet likable, helping give body to an extremely enjoyable tale."

Congratulations to all the winners.

Stephen M. Hunt script repped in London. Last year  a string of 1st place wins made Steve Europe's most successful screenplay contest competitor. Networking from this platform led directly to an invitation to write a short crime-drama for an Emmy Award winning TV director (see Steve's prior posts). After that, veteran BBC writer Peter Mackie invited Steve to co-write  a TV pilot with him. The outcome was "Boss Girl" that went on to win 1st prize in this year's Marquee Lights TV pilot category. "Boss Girl" is now being promoted in London by Peter's agent. So these days, 95% of Steve's energy goes into promoting who he is and what he does. The upshot is he'll probably only finish one new feature script this year being "None Shall Survive" which is a brand new take on the horror/slasher genre.

"Redreamers" a Finalist at 2015 Filmmakers International

My original, high concept script "Redreamers" reaches a new height.  First placing Quarterfinalist at 2015 Shore Scripts.  Now a Finalist at 2015 Filmmakers International.

What if all your dreams could be retrieved?  And the one dream you pick is played back to you as you pass away so you die believing that was actually the life you lived?  This concept weaves through the story centered around Mike, who turns to that technology to continue "living" with the family he lost in a car crash.  But when he meets a new woman, he must decide between fantasy and real life.

In The Black List coverage, the reader says: "There's something very relatable and compelling about this reality even though it is science fiction.  It's both escapist and tragic in a layered and clever way.  Plus, it's just a great pitch."

Stephen M. Hunt

How many entries into screenplay competitions does it take to get a short screenplay filmed?  Well, in the case of Stephen M. Hunt's short fantasy drama script “Death’s Lady Love”, during 2015/16 Hunt entered it into dozens and dozens of them. It got nowhere frequently but also gradually clocked up eleven finalist placings and on one occasion came second. But during all this it was also accumulating 1st place wins -  it wasn’t until the seventh top prize that a deal was done. “Death’s Lady Love” commences filming this autumn on location in Maine.  There are two morals here. Firstly, just like Hollywood itself, screenplay competition land is fickle, indeed. Secondly, ride those ups and downs and never give up.

Herman and Aronson's M.I.L.F.S attracting huge attention!

Two 40-something women follow their dream of writing erotic romance novels; but what happens when their teenaged sons, conservative husbands, and judgmental community takes notice? Rife with innuendo, but clean on the screen, MILFS is exactly what these two moms are.

Herman and Aronson's hilarious tv pilot for M.I.L.F.S. Is attracting strong buzz. Funny, sarcastic, a bit raunchy, and definitely satirical, M.I.L.F.S has already been requested for follow up with two production companies!

Based on the true experiences of  Tam's and Cindy's journey into writing erotic romance fiction, while balancing the issues of raising teenaged sons (and special needs sons as well), M.I.L.F.S is sassy and brash, but truly exciting and unique.

A Step Up for SCREENWRITING: STEP BY STEP by Wendy Jane Henson

When I first taught screenwriting, I wanted a clear, simple, user-friendly textbook that began with the fundamentals of writing drama and graduated to writing drama for film. When I found none, I wrote one. At first, my college photocopied the book for my classes. But a film professional friend urged me to find a real publisher. My first email query went to Allyn & Bacon/Pearson Education. Within an hour, their editor asked for the manuscript. A year later, my book was in print.

SCREENWRITING: STEP BY STEP, now available in various languages, is used for college courses in several countries. Recently, Pearson Education translated my book into Chinese, and it is helping aspiring screenwriters in China's growing film industry. Copies are in at least 71 libraries worldwide, including...of all places...Libya! When I got my Chinese copy, I was bowled over to see a shot from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE on the cover and to receive praise from professors at the University of Beijing for a book that is "...creative, intelligent, and scientific."

The story centers around a young girl, Emma, whose exposure to the word of God, filtered through the twisted mind of her pedophile father, has stripped her of many feelings and emotions and left her hating the Deity she should love. There she uncovers a greater evil; an uncle who shares the same demented genetic markers as his twin; a man who serially marries women then kidnaps their young daughters for his personal pleasure.  Sensing something amiss with her uncle, she eventually uncovers his hidden life for which he pays the ultimate price, but does the apple fall very far from the tree?

Lincoln's Timeless Love by Millie Raphael in Top 100 Emerging Screenwriters Lincoln's Timeless Love combines the most compelling elements of Young Mister Lincoln and Somewhere in Time.
The screenplay is based on the story of young Abraham Lincoln and the love of his life: Ann Rutledge.  It is told through the eyes of a modern day, coming-of-age woman studying History in Washington, D.C.

“It is well-written, impeccably researched, and quite moving. There are strong, complex roles for actors.  Most importantly, it’s heartfelt and full of passion for the story, the characters and their poetry.”

Stephen Potts lands development deal for GLAZVOROV

Back in 2011 I woke one morning with the basis for a historically set horror film in my head. (The premise: a trainload of Tsarist Russians steams eastwards, fleeing the Russian Revolution. A pack of Siberian Zombies bars their way.)

Then titled ZOMBIE EXPRESS, I  pitched it at the London Screenwriters' Festival before a couple of hundred people, one of whom liked it enough to ask me to submit it to his company, Iron Box Films. Retitled GLAZVOROV, with a new monster  - and no zombies -  but still set in the Russian Revolution, it then had a rehearsed reading before John Madden and a live audience at BAFTA in London, in the Rocliffe New Writing Forum. Soon after that I clinched a funded development deal with iron Box, a fledgling British company with a growing slate of films in producution and  development.

Rebecca's screenplay, SONGBIRD, makes the Semifinals in 2015 Nashville Film Festival screenplay competition in Music Inspired genre.

Rebecca says, "I'm so humbled that this script is gaining interest. This story took me on a journey outside of my usual family-friendly genre into the world of Sadie, an abused 15 year old girl devasted by the loss of family and home from a natural disaster. Depsite life's obstacles, Sadie digs deep to find her roots and a courageous voice. The inspiration came to me after watching Carrie Underwood's music video of 'Blown Away'. It warms my heart knowing SONGBIRD has taken flight all on its own."
