RICHARD WILLETT'S "9/10" WINS AWARD FOR DIVERSITY Richard Willett's feature screenplay 9/10 was the first runner-up in the diversity category of the Cynosure Screenwriting Awards. The judges said: "This is a well thought out, beautifully written film. Using the device that the audience knows more than the characters is a brilliant stroke. We root for them. Ache for them. Want them to be OK. The moment before Armageddon looks just like this, that's what the script is telling us. It's funny and romantic, and spooky, and sad, and filled with powerful emotion."

THE DRAGON RIDER by Geoff Holder wins Honorable Mention in WISC

Geoff Holder's sci-fi THE DRAGON RIDER gains Honorable Mention (4th Place) in the WeScreenplay International Screenplay Competition.

A few comments from the judges:
"This is a terrific piece that does an excellent job of making the impossible probable. The core of the story is strong and offers a truly exciting adventure."

"Filled with chair gripping action, The Dragon Rider is a fun yet somewhat campy fantasy romp with a cast of unique characters who manage to stand out while not upstaging our protagonist. Sigourney Weaver like heroine Jane is nicely complex, dark yet likable, helping give body to an extremely enjoyable tale."

Congratulations to all the winners.

IRISH FILM BOARD PRAISES FANTASY SCRIPT 'ASHLING'

The Irish Film Board has high praise for Mary DeSantis's Fantasy/Adventure screenplay, Ashling. The following are excerpted from IFB Readers' Reports, August 2015:

"Pulling together elements of stories such as Lord of the Rings, "Game of Thrones," Hunger Games and even Brave, this sprawling epic seems more suited to the expanse of a novel than a screenplay."

"...there's a hunger for these kinds of stories."

"Mythology-based fantasy adventure of epic proportions set in Ireland... Along the lines of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, Beowulf... Very strong heroine... It has a lot of commercial elements and could be visually striking: big war/battle pieces, fantastical creatures, superpowers, romantic subplot, chess-style power games between groups, a ticking clock."

Mary DeSantis was recently notified that her Fantasy/Adventure script, Ashling, has been nominated for the 'Culture & Heritage Award' during the preliminary judging stage of the 2016 Fresh Voices Screenplay Contest.

"This script represents the myths and fables of Ireland with great reverence, which, despite the popularity of Western mythology in the fantasy genre, remains underrepresented," explained the Fresh Voices Judge as the reason for the nomination.

Ashling is set entirely in Ireland and features a strong female lead, a time travel element, mythological creatures, a romantic subplot, plus epic battles between humans, giants and elves.

JASON VINLEY FINALIST AT BEVERLY HILLS SCREENPLAY CONTEST

Jason Vinley's full-length play, ELVIS WAS KING, BUT JOLIE WAS GOLDEN, was a finalist in the 2013 Beverly Hills Screenplay Contest, Stage Play category. EWKBJWG is a character-driven story about a deadbeat dad, rock singer on the lam who attempts to win back his estranged wife and son.

Philip Taylor, who directed plays in NYC, then led a successful career directing, producing and writing for network TV, and now teaches screenwriting at ASU, said, “It starts out as a  wonderfully light romantic comedy but, just as you're getting comfortable, it takes a totally different direction. The play continues to spiral and surprise until the final curtain, but never loses its sense of humor. And, while Vinley is whisking us along on a magic carpet ride of mystery and intrigue, he unobtrusively makes some perceptive points on a failed artist's confrontation with his own ambition. This is a superbly written piece of work. I urge you to read it."

Randy Brown Commissioned to Write Scenes for Screenplay & is in Production

I am a Canadian screenwriter in the hinterland. Earlier this year I made a wonderful connection. Mohen Naorem, a director in eastern India, liked some of my sample writing. He's producing and directing a feature film called 'My Japanese Niece'. It's a historically important period piece designed to heal old wounds between India and Japan, 70 years after the Second World War. Mohen commissioned me to write the battle scenes for the Battle of Lion's Box and the Battle of Numshigum for a total of 28 pages. The first battle was filmed in Thailand earlier this year and the second sequence goes into production in India in November.

This marks my first writing credit in a feature film as a contributing writer. As a reward, Mohen has asked me to portray one of the characters in the second set of battle scenes. I am honored to have my work produced half way around the world with a team that comes from three continents. The lead actor, Junichi Kajioka, is of Japanese descent and lives in London. With organizations like the ISA, my work can have a global impact.
