Reading Identities with Writer-in-Residence Sakae Manning

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Women writers read and discuss identity in their work, their own self-identification, and experiences translating their identity for a society that views race, gender, and sexual orientation as individual categories. Panelists are fiction writers Teresa Lo, Thea Monyee, and Désirée Zamorano. CSUN English and Africana Studies Professor, Dr. Shubha Venugopal, will moderate the reading and discussion with audience members.

This is the second of three public events presented by Beach House Fall 2017 Writer-in-Residence Sakae Manning. During her tenure, Manning is working on an untitled novella and Kimono Blues, a novel narrated in turn by two women. Both share a bond as family truth seekers. As their search unfolds, they discover what survival and sacrifice means when seeking refuge and opportunity in a new land.

Manning is onsite working from an office in the Marion Davies Guest House, October 10 through December 12 of this year. The public is invited to chat with her about her work and the residency during her office hours Saturdays from 11am-2pm. Her public programs champion women of color telling their stories, and take place 10/24, 11/14 and 12/5. From mid-October you can follow her progress on the Beach House Artist-in-Residence blog at beachhouseair.blogspot.com.
