Much More than a Script Competition

CONTEST DESCRIPTION

In addition to all the fantastic independent films that are submitted to ÉCU every year, we also have a special competition for all you talented and creative scriptwriters out there who want your scripts to be read, opening new and exciting opportunities, and creating possibilities for both feature and short screenplays.

As part of the ÉCU 2021 film festival, the script competition’s focus is on independent screenplays, that is, scripts that aren’t aimed at mainstream Hollywood film markets. Writers are invited to submit their short and feature-length scripts to the competition where they compete for the best script of the festival. We will read scripts in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian before making an official selection of the very best.

The two overall winners will receive an additional prize and the coveted title of Best Feature Script / Best Short Script 2021 – a title we are certain will help emerging writers overcome the obstacle of “representation” and get their scripts read by the right people.

Previous winners include BRIDGE BY THE EARTHEN HOUSE by Paul Hunt (UK), TIME MUSEUM by Gehee Lee (USA), HUNTERS POINTE by Scott Liapis (USA), GOING HOME by Nir Shelter (Australia), THE COMPETITORS by Ruth Greenberg (UK), YELLOW DRAGON AND THE RED FOX by Anthony Etherington (UK) and BEFORE THE BOMB by Tannaz Hazemi and James Grimaldi (Iran), THE CHICKEN by Una Gunjak (Croatia/Germany), AS AN ACTRESS by Maria Hinterkörner (Austria), 6TH OF SEPTEMBER by Ionut Gaga (Romania).

In 2012, Una Gunjak submitted her script THE CHICKEN to ÉCU's Much More Than A Script Competition and won “Best Short Script” award. Just two years later the script had been made into a film and THE CHICKEN went on to win “Best European Independent Film” at ÉCU 2016.

Are you writing a screenplay? Have you got a script written and ready but don’t know how to get it out there? Why not give it a go? See all details of how to submit here. The Rules and Regulations for ‘Much More than a Script’ Competition can be found here.

Last deadline for the Much More Than a Script Competition is March 7th, 2021

PRIZES

Prizes vary each year, but are donated by various partners such as Kingston, International Documentary Association, Parrot, Syrp, Film Inquiry, Sell a Script, Inktip, The Academy of Film Writing and many others.

The European Independent Film Festival

ÉCU – The European Independent Film Festival is dedicated to the discovery and advancement of the very best independent filmmakers from around the world. We proudly provide a unique platform for risk-taking storytellers to reach the broadest audiences possible.

Our annual festival showcases films that demonstrate quality, innovation, and creativity in both form and content. These qualities are judged in 14 categories, 7 of which are open to non-European filmmakers (from the Americas, Australia, Africa, and Asia), and compete for 25 awards. Jury members come from around the globe, have a variety of backgrounds, and are all united in their desire to screen films that will truly impress and inspire attendees.

ÉCU has expressly established itself and is often referred to as the Sundance of Europe. As such, we are the perfect venue for bold and visionary filmmakers to present their work to the cinema-loving public who are actively seeking alternatives to commercial-hungry major studio projects. Our screenings of new and thought-provoking cinematic creativity attracts more than just the public, but agents, talent scouts, production company representatives, distributors, and established producers, all of whom are searching for inspiring projects and raw talent.

ÉCU – The European Independent Film Festival has a wide variety of events for attendees to participate in throughout the weekend. Following every screening session, there are Q&A’s where audience members can pose questions directly to the directors. Directors then have the opportunity to respond and speak about their work and process. An assortment of workshops focusing on a number of subjects and hosted by industry professionals are available to all attendees. ÉCU is also a strong supporter of musicians and live music can be heard throughout the entirety of the weekend. Every evening there are amazing after parties where attendees and filmmakers can unwind, ideas can percolate, and a general good time can be had by all.
