Andrea Margaret Higgins writes about young protagonists who encounter the supernatural & magical realism, and storylines that hover on the edge between family-friendly and scary—but that ultimately elevate the emotions.
Her work is informed by a background in dance, choreography, theater, and film, as well as teaching experience with children and young adults in K-12 and college settings. She has worked with experiential approaches to archetypal character development and has studied story structure, particularly as it pertains to the hero’s journey, through the Story Grid Guild.
Andrea has also explored the role of the arts as a community healing mechanism. First, as part of a study abroad program in Northern Ireland. Later, when she was selected to participate as an audience facilitator in NOTES FROM THE FIELD, Anna Deavere Smith’s one-woman social justice play that explores the prison pipeline in the education system.
Her directing and producing experience includes: dance and theater works; film projects (including a recent short that she produced and directed through the Sundance COLLAB program); as well as a newly released podcast project.
Andrea's feature, QUINTESSENCE DANCE, a supernatural dance thriller, was named to the Top 50 in the ISA Fast Track Fellowship. She was named a fellowship finalist for an earlier, short version of the script. And her family-friendly live-action hybrid, DANIEL AND THE SEA DRAGON, is picking up steam with several placements. She is presently working on a holiday-centered rom-com with a twist, and a short about a nun with anger management issues.
