Barney Cheng landed on the Hollywood map as an actor in 2002 with his acclaimed performance in Woody Allen's Hollywood Ending. The New York Times described Barney's comedic timing as "surgically precise." The Orange County Register raved that Barney "steals every scene he's in."
In addition to acting, Barney works as a narrative and documentary writer-director-producer. His award-winning films have collectively screened in over 100 film festivals worldwide.
Barney is currently creating an 8-part limited series (“Born Doing Time”) about the iconic civil rights trailblazer Mia Yamamoto, who ignited a movement, as the first openly transgender trial lawyer in America. Based on a true story, “Born Doing Time” is a compelling story of an Asian-American woman warrior who triumphed against all odds.
Previously, Barney participated in Ryan Murphy’s Half Initiative, NBCUniversal Directing Program and was a Writer-Director Film Independent Fellow. He directed and produced 14 episodes of Okaeri Voices, an oral history project documenting the voices of older LGBTQ Japanese Americans 60+. His film A Love Letter amplified the voices of transgender Asian Americans and their families, and has moved countless individuals worldwide.
Fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese, Barney is particularly proud of his Chinese-English language narrative feature Baby Steps which received Tribeca Film Institute’s All Access fellowship.
Produced by the Oscar-winning producer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Baby Steps received jury and audience awards for best feature at numerous festivals. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Baby Steps an “engaging” and “touching” film. “Inarguably, here’s a film created by and starring Asian-Americans that is definitely worth applauding,” raves HuffPost. “Baby Steps is becoming more and more relevant by the second.” Baby Steps was released theatrically in numerous territories worldwide and acquired by Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon for streaming.
