Juhani Nurmi

Screenwriter | Producer

Biography

Born in 1966, Juhani Nurmi grew up in his native city of Oulu, Finland – with a seven-year stint in southern Sweden in between. He speaks fluent Finnish, Swedish, English and German (on a good day). Juhani has been a hardcore movie fan ever since the age of 11, when he saw the 10th James Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) in a Finnish cinema. Next year, after having moved to Sweden with his family, Juhani saw George Lucas’ Star Wars in 1978, which forever changed his life and destiny. Juhani has often said that ”movies chose me, and not vice versa.” Like so many youngsters in 1970’s, Juhani’s young and fertile mind was profoundly impacted by Lucas’s space opera masterpiece, but he idolized other period filmmakers too, mainly Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, John Carpenter, Martin Scorsese, William Friedkin and Francis Ford Coppola. At the age of 22, Juhani started a weekly radio show about movies at Radio Mega in his native city of Oulu, Finland. An early live radio interview with Finnish Hollywood director Renny Harlin – who had briefly returned to Helsinki, Finland to celebrate his first box-office hit, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) – was so encouraging that it helped to coax out the naturally timid Juhani out of his shell. A period of over 25 years in film journalism ensued, where Juhani wrote for and edited some of Finland’s most prestigious publications (including Helsingin Sanomat, Image, Episodi) and interviewed Hollywood’s most famous filmmakers and stars for Finnish television (including YLE 1-2, MTV3, Nelonen). Juhani also created a film festival specialized in his life-long love – film music – called Oulu Film Festival (OFF), which invited the late great Academy Award winner, Jerry Goldsmith (Alien) and Trevor Jones (The Last of the Mohicans) to conduct their film music live with the Oulu Symphony Orchestra in 1993 and 1994. Juhani’s enduring friendships with Hollywood legends, such as director Renny Harlin, the late Academy Award winning Swiss designer H.R. Giger (Alien), the five-time Academy Award winner Richard Taylor (CEO of Weta Workshop in Wellington, New Zealand), film producer Paula Wagner (Tom Cruise’s former agent and production partner) and Jan Harlan (Stanley Kubrick’s former producer and brother-in-law) encouraged Juhani to start thinking of writing original movie scripts of his own. Having already written a few spec scripts, such as the Faustian sci-fi thriller Darkness Within and Little Green Men (based upon the legendary UFO encounter, The Kelly-Hopkinsville Incident of August 1955 in Kentucky, U.S.A.), two kindred spirits found each other, as Juhani befriended the German born director of Stowaway, Marcus Nispel via Facebook in late 2012. Marcus graciously invited Juhani to help him adapt an original idea of his, which was known early on as Klabautermann. In addition to Little Green Men, Juhani is currently developing an alternate history WWII action thriller called The Damned with director Renny Harlin and concept artist Björn Hurri, and an original TV series called Out of the Blue, with his creative partners, director-writer Eric Red and concept artist John Gallagher. Juhani’s favorite movies of all time are (in the order of preference): Alien (1979, directed by Ridley Scott), Jaws (1975, directed by Steven Spielberg) and The Thing (1982, directed by John Carpenter). Juhani Nurmi lives near Helsinki, Finland with his wife, Päivi, where they run their video production company, Earlybird Creations Ltd. together.
