Justin Solaiman

Screenwriter | Director

Biography

Justin Solaiman was born in Los Angeles, but after the 94 earthquake, his family made the decision to move across the country to Louisville, KY where he spent his young life. Wanting another change of pace, his family moved to Atlanta, GA, where he grew up and presently resides. Creatively, Justin throughout his education moved from game design to music to composing until finally, after graduating in 2016 from the University of Georgia with a BA in Human Geography, he made the decision to pursue writing and film-making. Honing his craft in the couple years after, Justin created his first short in 2017 with HORSE HEAD, which screened in midtown Atlanta at the Atlanta Underground Film Festival.

In the time since, Justin has written several shorts, features and TV pilots. His shorts have placed or won in several prestigious festivals and contests including Scriptapalooza, Screencraft, 13horror, Hollyshorts, Cannes Screenplay Contest, etc. His first feature, ANIMA, was selected at the Oaxaca Film Festival and most recently the British Independent Film Festival. He is currently on the second draft of his second feature, ANHEDONIA!, and in post production on his second short film, RINGLOOM, which recently placed at the Atlanta Film Festival. He also recently completed the short script, THE CORONATING, which will be his next short film.

As someone who's family came to America with nothing, and his racial background growing up as a Bangladeshi-American in a post 9/11 America, Justin finds himself drawn to stories of isolation, otherness, insecurity, inadequacy, and dehumanization, along with more universal themes of dealing with mental illness such as depression, reconciling with guilt, philosophical queries such as absurd-ism in the modern context, and humanism.
