Nicholas Tana is a director, producer, actor, musician, and an award winning writer. His experience includes getting his start as a contributing writer for the fashion magazine 944, and the film entertainment magazine Moving Pictures. At KAET Channel 8 in Tempe, Arizona, he served as a Production Assistant while attending Arizona State University, where he graduated with Honors earning a B.A. in English and a double minor in Business and Spanish. Upon graduation, Nicholas Tana served as an Associate Director for ESPN before starting his own production company, Smart Media, for which he has written, produced, and directed a number of commercials, web-episodes, promotional spots, and movies.
His one-act play “The Nun The Bum and The Gun” is about a thief who gets robbed by a nun. The play won the SHORT & NEAT One-Act Play Festival, and was later published in The Rockford Review. His follow up “The Naked Model” is about a model who shows up to a nude drawing class already naked, and was performed to a sell out crowd at Stand Up New York. His original children animation pilot Bony Macaroni is about an adventurous little girl who finds her grandmother’s magical walking stick that leads her on fantastical adventures. The pilot voiced by Emmy Award winning animation voice actor, Eric Bauza, was picked up for distribution by Bejuba Entertainment.
In recent years, Nicholas Tana wrote and directed the documentary, Sticky: A (Self) Love Story, which stars Janeane Garofalo, Keith Morris, and Larry Flynt. The groundbreaking documentary was written up in Newsweek, The Daily Beast, and GQ Mexico, and was voted by Indiewire as top movies to watch for in 2016. The film was recently endorsed by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) for its educational contribution to an important study around human sexuality. The groundbreaking documentary is currently an Amazon AVD Stars Winner and is being distributed world wide by Vision Films, Inc. a partner of Sony Home Entertainment.
Tana wrote, directed and starred in the supernatural comedy web-series, Hell’s Kitty. The series is based on Tana's real life experience working as a writer in Hollywood while living with his possessive cat, Angel, who is also rumored to be possessed. The series stars a host of iconic horror talent who star in comedic parodies of the roles that made them famous. Doug Jones, Lee Meriwether, Courtney Gains, Ashley C. Williams, Michael Berryman, Dale Midkiff, and Adrienne Barbeau, all make guest appearances. The show includes costume work by Killer Klowns From OuterSpace writer Charles Chiodo. Hell’s Kitty has proven popular with horror fans and cat lovers alike, and has screened to sold out crowds at the Chinese theater and the Phoenix COMICON. In 2015, Hell’s Kitty won the audience choice award at the Hollyshorts Film Festival. Hell's Kitty was distributed as a feature film by Wild Eye Releasing in 2018.
In 2019, Hell’s Kitty was produced as a musical in a co-production between Smart Media and New Musicals Inc. The musical sold out its last weekend run of performances at the Broadwater theater, in Hollywood, CA. The movie is currently available on Amazon Prime. This same year, Tana launched his own publishing company, New Classics Books, which published three of his children's books to include Monsters Are Afraid of Babies, The Kingdom of Glee and The Kitten, The Cat & The Apple. Disney Publishing hired Tana to write a Snow White story, which will appear as part of a 5 Minute Easter Stories collection in 2020.
Tana currently lives and works in Los Angeles for various entertainment studios as a freelance consultant and is currently developing new ideas for both TV and film.
