Much of my life and my writing reflect the wild intersections of modern life. I was born to an undocumented Mexican mother who “passed” as white and a Jewish father who sold arms to the Palestinians when we lived for a year in Egypt. Really. He did. I was a gay Jewish kid surrounded by hot Muslims. I lived in my head a lot, spinning stories. I have a considerable amount of experience, but an odd career trajectory. I started off 20 years ago in indie film, then wrote a couple of movies for Showtime, including the one my husband and I produced, Bobbie’s Girl. It earned an Emmy nom for Bernadette Peters. My subsequent adventures in episodic tv didn’t follow a straight path and, to be honest, I struggled to make a place for myself in the industry. So, I wrote three books, and plays and musicals. I kept writing. The television landscape began to change. A little over a year ago I started plotting a path back to episodic tv. I wrote two pilots and a sample script. One got me into the WGA Writers Access Program last year under Glen Mazzera. It was a great experience and a new beginning. I am hungry for more. Along with my creative abilities, I bring a background in production and can draw upon experience working with others as part of a team but also in other situations as a leader. I’m a strong believer in collaboration and my instinct is to look for solutions—both in a narrative sense as a writer and in an interpersonal sense as a co-worker.
