John hints at Joan’s checkered past and doesn't flinch at his daughter's threats of releasing information that could doom the family's business empire. Joan's mother, Gweneth, urges Shawn to leave Scotland after John rejects the deal and it seems there's a secret to Joan that no one is telling him... That night, John has a mysterious stroke, and Joan seizes the opportunity to take control of the board of directors of her father’s company and push Shawn’s deal through.

Joan and Shawn move to New York to begin construction on the luxury condominium tower and before long, try to work on their rapidly deteriorating relationship. As things continue to unravel between them, Shawn learns more of Joan’s past and his co-workers begin fearing for his life and their livelihood as Joan is their new boss until the condominium project is complete. Joan hires a private investigator as she feels Shawn has been cheating on her all the while, Shawn and his team dig into Joan’s past. Both parties find truths about the other that they cannot swallow. Shawn learns Joan’s previous love affairs have mostly ended tragically and he begins to understand that Joan’s parents were trying to keep them apart to spare him of their daughter’s violent ways. As Shawn works on leaving Joan or fixing the relationship, Joan works on finding ways to correct her blindness. She is successful but keeps this secret from Shawn so she can see the real Shawn for herself as she determines whether or not she wants to kill him like the others in her past. We find out that Joan has an imaginary friend, due to her psychosis, that’s urging her to kill Shawn and whom she’s been battling the entire story. Although she loves him, Joan ultimately cannot trust him and poisons Shawn like she did her other lovers and renders him speechless and wheelchair-bound. As they attend a funeral together, Joan latches on to her next victim with a helpless Shawn watching on.
