Award winning writer, actor, comedienne who creates content, produces and directs.
I grew up in London and S. Africa and went to school with Americans, so I'm confused but very versatile. I have an internationally skewed POV and an eclectic range of interests and special knowledge from both personal and professional experience - from mental illness and addiction; classic motorcycles to philosophy (especially applied ethics), world faiths and history, especially 19th century American, African and European.
I'm based in LA and London and am a dual citizen. I write female-centric, character led stories with meaty interesting roles for actors of ALL ages. My scripts cross genres and formats & I have credits for UK TV, many short films, SONY web series, BBC radio and theatre that include very dark comedy, sketch material, comedy-horror, psychological thriller, YA drama, bittersweet dramedy, supernatural/horror and stories set in alternative worlds/times with a bit of magic realism. What unites all, regardless of tone & genre, are recurring themes and subject matter: I'm fascinated by unusual 'conditions of the mind' - be it memory loss, mental illness or addiction, and suffer from a crippling existential angst which is expressed via characters dealing with grief, coming of age (including middle age and old age!), a lack of faith, on quests for meaning and purpose. Oh, and death - lots of death. In all guises. That's just the comedies. Boom boom.
ONE WHITE CROW (historical psychological thriller & true story) – feature - is #8 ON THE 2019 RED LIST (thrillers); was a PAGE finalist; in the Tracking Board Top 50 & selected for the Meryl Streep/Nicole Kidman backed NY Writers Lab. Previously optioned by Screen Australia and LOI’d by Fox Searchlight, it now has a shopping agreement with Bohemia Originals in LA and Oscar winner Mark Sanger attached to direct.
Feature comedy UP YOURS, BRIDGET JONES was a finalist in the National Lampoon reboot ‘search for comedy gold’ contest and has made the final or placed highly in the PAGE, Screencraft, Stage 32, Roadmap, Finishline, and other competitions.
KILLING CHRISTMAS, a short bittersweet dramedy that I wrote, produced and perform in, is currently in its 13th festival, has been nominated for 6 awards and won BEST INTERNATIONAL SHORT at TWEETFEST 9UK) 2019 and BEST HOLIDAY SHORT at LONDON INT. SHORT FILM FEST.

My first produced short, BREAKING OUT, an intense psychodrama (directed by Oscar winner Marienela Maldonaldo) premiered in competition in Cannes, was shown in over 20 international festivals & won Best European short at Angers. WATCH at https://vimeo.com/49494558
SOME OTHER CREDITS: I wrote on season 2 and 3 of SONY's ground breaking plot interactive YA web series Sofia’s Diary, which went on to be broadcast on Channel 5. I've been commissioned by RHI/Hallmark to write treatments for a 4 hour fantasy mini-series based on The Little Mermaid and Landscape Entertainment to create & write a 10 hour historical TV drama.
I started writing professionally with sketches for Emmy Award winning UK all-female sketch show Smack The Pony, and NO LIMIT (SKY TV), have penned 2 sell-out Edinburgh Fringe Festival shows, with one woman comedy, Destination Elevation, also performed at the Soho Theatre, London.
I produced, created and starred in web sketch show Live!Sex!Girls! – which was picked up by StayTuned TV ; Babelgum (Europe) and Random (UK). www.youtube.com/pippahinchleycomedy
I'm a huge fan of political/social satire and dark humour to write about prejudice be it based on inequality of gender, creed, class or colour-(having brushed with apartheid and been in a 'mixed' marriage for years in both Europe and the States, I can make the enviable claim of having experienced 3 different brands of racism on 3 separate continents now, so feel eminently qualified here despite being pale and posh).
Or to blow a hole in our ethical codes - like how (and why) we assign different 'degrees of morality' to various ways we 'end life' (suicide, capital punishment, killing in combat, euthansia, abortion) but few of us can justify our intensity of feeling with sound reasoning or without wild inconsistency.
I'm constantly trying to treat the serious, uncomfortable or just deeply depressing with that tricky tightrope that is a darkly comedic or very bittersweet tone. Am a big fan of THE END OF THE FUCKING WORLD, AFTERLIFE, GETTING ON, FIGHT CLUB, TROPIC THUNDER, TEAM AMERICA. And personally I would KILL to write a sentence uttered by Colbert, John Oliver, Sam Bee, Trevor Noah et al, I worship at the altar of Matt and Trey (and will always choose Life Of Brian over Mel Gibson's J.C.)
For me, a comedic tone has the potential to bring home the 'serious' better, harder, to a wider audience. And laughing is good for our health anyway.
I have a screenwriting MA from LCC, LONDON. Taught screenwriting at the University of London (Birkbeck). Regularly do script consultancy and coverage work for production companies and contests. I've been an actor since my teens, in TV regular roles, features, sitcoms, theatre and radio/audio, and perform live sketch comedy and stand-up. Repped by top UK lit agent Casarotto’s.
“Bridget Jones on acid”… “a very funny Brit chick”…“the party philosopher” ... "a female Ricky Gervais"... LA comedy reviews.
